A Practical Guide to Reading Your Condition

The following questions are intended to help us describe our condition precisely—before, during and just after our meditations. In addition to helping us develop sensitivity, they also encourage us to use greater precision when writing in our diary. As for the diary it is strictly for personal use. We suggest that you first make a brief note of your condition prior to meditation (question 1), and then answer the other questions immediately after meditation. You can also write down what remains in you after the meditation, trying to distinguish between observations relating to the various “levels” of consciousness—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Examples are provided as suggestions but what is really called for is to be subtly attentive to one’s own “real” condition. 1. General Condition Prior to Meditation How do I feel? For example: light or heavy quiet or agitated peaceful or distressed centred, distracted or confused happy or sad per...

Reading and Preserving Our Condition

Why Should We Read Our Condition? This is a unique technique which my Master has developed. He is able to transmit his own spiritual accomplishments, his spiritual state or condition into our hearts. This is something unique, but at the same time something which all of us can feel, even at the very first meditation sitting. All that we have to do to feel it is to be receptive to it. I must add that whether we feel it or not, it is yet there, working upon us from inside. But to be sensitive to it hastens our progress considerably. — P. Rajagopalachari, Principles of Sahaj Marg , Volume 1, p. 179 Reading the Condition After Meditation That is why Babuji always said: “… after meditation sit quiet for a few minutes and brood over your condition—make it yours. Then you are able to read your condition. ‘What is it I have felt?’ And once you appreciate that, you want to go deeper into it.” — P. Rajagopalachari, Heart to Heart , Volume 1, p. 320 Writing Down Our Finding...

How Condition Shapes Experience

When we sit for meditation, we are normally expected to feel calm; we are normally expected to feel that thoughts, or the level of thoughts, has gone down, the frequency of thoughts has gone down. These are therefore not experiences; they are the consequences of meditation. (…) Technically, it is not an experience; it is a state induced in you by the fact of meditation or, shall we say, by the fact of correct meditation, right meditation properly done. (…) So we have to distinguish between experiences and conditions or states. The Interplay Between Condition and Experience Now the other thing is, when we have these two, there is not only a distinction between them, but there is interplay between them, in the sense that when our condition is gross (…) the grossness itself conditions the experience. (…) So, to know what is an experience, to know whether it’s really an experience, we have to be aware of our condition and also to be alert to note what is going on. (…) I would say that...

What Is an Experience?

Speaking in a very general manner, experiences can be classified as falling into three groups. Experiences Arising from Imagination The first group contains experiences arising out of the abhyasi’s own imagination or as a result of his having projected them himself. (…) Worse, they may project the same things unconsciously during subsequent sittings and have experiences which are their own creation. (…) Experiences Arising from Cleaning The second group covers all experiences arising from the cleaning process. Master has stated that when the system of the abhyasi is cleaned, then the past impressions are removed. When these impressions surface to the mind, then the original experience or activity which created the impressions is once again created in the mind. (…) Revelatory Experiences The third category contains what Master has referred to as “revelatory experiences.” These are of a very valuable nature as they contain messages from the inner Self of the abhyasi w...

Condition, Position, Approach and Yatra

“Condition” is different from “experience” and “approach,” which applies to the stage in the journey of the soul or yatra . Position and Condition Q: Chari, when one reads one’s spiritual condition, …how is that related to what you were saying earlier about the points? A: You see, there are two things actually. There is the position and there is the condition. You know, I am, maybe in this house; my condition may be very good. I may be in a smaller house; I may still be in very good condition. It has nothing to do with my position. The position relates to my evolution, the condition relates to what I am, like a tomato is ripe. The ripeness is its condition. If you put it on a shelf, it is higher; if you bring it down, it is lower down. So one is the evolution of the soul to the higher approaches of spiritual being and the other is its condition. The condition may always be good. We should try to preserve it. He moves us. We preserve our condition. Movement from One Positi...

What Is a Spiritual Condition?

Sahaj Marg literature contains no precise definition of condition. For this reason, we here take a step-by-step approach, with the help of a series of quotes from our Masters. First of all, it is useful to note that there are different levels of condition: the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Spiritual Condition Because it is like something which is covered up, like a lamp with dirty glass around it. Clean it and the light is the same. So the whole thing is nothing, you know, we do not become pure. My Master’s teaching does not recognize anything as pure or impure. It only says there is an original condition which we have covered over by our activities and our thoughts. Remove this and then you expose the inner reality which was always there. — P. Rajagopalachari, Heart to Heart , Volume 3, p. 48 So when we go to the Master, we must understand that He knows everything about us. He sees not only our bodies, but He can see samskaric diseases, what is going to co...
